Travel Safety Tips

You can find many Travel Safety Tips out there, but the one that we share in this post here is what posted by AirAsia in their website. Read it and share it as many are not aware of many of these tips….

There’s always a lot of excitement leading up to a trip. This can make us easily forget that troubles may occur without proper preparation, whether it is theft, loss of belongings, or worse. Here’s how you can enjoy worry-free travelling:

  • Don’t list your home address on your luggage tag. If you’re on a business trip, put the company’s address on the tag. If visiting friends, list their address. You wouldn’t want your unoccupied home to fall prey to thieves prowling the airport for such information.
  • Stay with your luggage until it has been checked-in. Keep a foot on the handle if you must lay it down.
  • Carry all your important documents with you. Don’t check-in anything you cannot afford to lose. And be sure to photocopy your passport, driving license and credit cards.
  • Carry a pocket flashlight. It will come in handy should you find yourself in poorly lit and unfamiliar surroundings. You may also want to keep it by your bed at night.
  • Make sure that your prescription medicines are filled and labelled properly. Some countries ban certain medication.
  • Avoid wearing accessories that reflect wealth. Better yet, leave your jewellery at home. It helps deter you from being mugged or robbed.
  • Never accept drinks from strangers, and keep your eye on your drink at all times.
  • Opt for hotels that use key-cards to open room doors, and ensure that your room has a peephole and deadbolt lock. You may also want to secure your door further by pushing a rubber stop under it.
  • Ask for a room near a stairwell, and never take the elevator if a fire or smoke is detected.
  • Avoid hiring unmarked taxis.
  • Sit behind the taxi driver so you can see him, but out of his view.
  • Pay the driver upon arriving at your destination and while you are still sitting in the vehicle.
  • If you must rent a car, rent one from a reputable company to avoid being made to drive a faulty vehicle.
  • Beware of ‘staged’ car accidents meant to catch you off-guard.
  • Back into your parking spaces to facilitate a quick exit.
  • Park only in well-lit and busy areas.
  • If your handphone does not work outside of your country, consider renting one that does for the duration of your trip. Be sure to key in important contact numbers i.e. police hotline, your hotel’s number, etc.
  • If you are detained for whatever reason by an official, ask for his/her identification. Never hesitate to ask to see his superior if in doubt. And remember to keep your emotions in check.
  • If travelling with children, bring along a current photograph of each child in the event that you become separated from them.
  • Discuss with your family what they would do in event of an emergency while away from home, e.g. whom to call, how to contact emergency personnel, etc.
  • Do not discuss your travel plans, reveal your room number or any other personal information in public within earshot of strangers.
  • Bring along a basic first-aid kit with bandages, iodine, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, diarrhoea medicine, etc.
  • Familiarise yourself with train and bus schedules before travelling. Have an alternative in place in the event your transportation plans change.
  • Consider purchasing portable alarms that emit a loud sound.
  • Watch for scams on the street. Pickpockets often work in adult-children pairs.
  • Never flash your money in public. And exchange funds with reputable and recognised exchangers only.
  • Consider hiring security service if travelling in areas known to be high in crime.
