Peach A low-cost airline in Japan

A pioneering low-cost airline in Japan has officially opened bookings for its new flights, offering cut-price fares for travellers in the country.

Peach, which brands itself ‘Japan’s first dedicated low cost carrier’, opened ticket reservations on its first route January 5, a move that could prove to be the opening gambit in a lengthy game for superiority in the budget Japanese market.

The tickets for flights between Osaka (Kansai) to Fukuoka will be priced at a promotional rate of JPY 250 (RM10), Peach said, with the first flight expected to depart March 1 – a limited number of tickets are available, but normal prices will start from JPY 3,780, said to be less than half of those offered by major airlines operating the same routes.

Tickets for the second route, from Osaka (Kansai) to Sapporo (Shin-Chitose) will go on sale at a later date, the carrier said.

The launch of Peach signals the start of a year which is expected to see significant movement in the nascent Japanese low-cost airline market, part of a wider shift being seen across Asia.

Both AirAsia and Jetstar are expected to bring services to the country in 2012, while both of Japan’s domestic giants – Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways – are planning to set up cut-price airlines.

Spring Airlines, China’s most successful low-cost carrier, announced last month that it would join the fray. – AFP
