In this post we share some tips and guide for those who plan to travel to Ho Chi Minh City.

The people

Vietnamese are very polite, gentle and friendly. Malaysian is nothing new to Vietnamese as one of the biggest tourist are actually from Malaysia. In Ben Than market for example you can find seller who can speak Bahasa Melayu. But please beware that there are some pickpocket cases in the busy area.

Accommodation

There are plenty of hotels in Ho Chi Minh City. 2-3 star hotels in HCM will cost you USD20-USD30 for one night. Many of this budget hotels require no early booking and in some hotels, you can further bargain on the rate. If your focus in on shopping, just find one near to Ben Thanh Market. !

If you looking for 4 – 5 stars hotel, you can always get Sheraton, Majestic Hotel etc at USD100+/night.   And if you are travel in a group, you can always go for 3 rooms service apartment at Sherwood Residence as low as USD170/night.

Eventhough, you go for 2-3 star hotels, in general the hotel service and cleanliness here could be rated as good. Most of the hotel offer free WIFI too.

If you are looking for cheap hotel rate, try Hotel Combined.

The Traffic

We need to highlight this for all first timer. Since the population of more than 7,000,000 million in HCM, you will find big crowd everywhere. If you are walking around the city, be careful as the roads are fulled with motorbike ! They will cross or turn in from any direction as and when they like.

Eventhough, you can see policemen, but they seems don’t bother to the motorist.

Transportation

The tourist spot in the District 1 area can be accessed on foot. If you are too lazy for walk, you can always try HCM taxi !.  Cyclos are the cheapest, easiest and most fun way to travel, especially for short distances.

From the airport you can also choose the air conditioned bus which will drop you off on the south side of Ben Thanh market. The bus service finishes at 19:00.

Taxi

If you are from Airport, make sure take VinaSUN  taxi services which you can find at their service counter at airport. The cost of taxi from Airport to Ben Than market is VND200,000 nett. During exit of the airport parking area, if the taxi ask for parking fee etc, just ignore them as you have paid all at the couter.

Be careful with the gangster taxis ! They love to name their service similar to reputable taxi companies. Some that we can share with you :

  • VinaSUN (fake VinasOn or VinasuM)
  • Mai Linh (MEi Linh or Mai Lin or M Taxi)

These gangster will charge outrageous fares.  From Ben Thanh Market, the taxi rate is VND75,000 – VND100,000 using a metered taxi.

HOT Tips ! Always ensure the driver turns the meter on before you begin setting off.

Taxi drivers earn commission by taking customers to certain hotels, so be explicit about exactly which hotel you want to be driven. To trick visitors into staying at other (commission paying) hotels, drivers may come up with any kind of excuses, e.g., “no vacancy”, “the circus is in town”, “that hotel burned down recently”, etc.

Money

The Vietnamese dong (VND) is the local currency. However, USD is also accepted in all shops. You can also change your currency at licensed money changer which you can easily find in the city.

Weather

Ho Chi Minh City’s geographical location means the city has a tropical climate with two seasons: a rain season and a dry season. The rain descends on the city in May and falls until November, while December until April is the dry season. The weather during the month before each change of season can sometimes be unpredictable.

Temperatures soar to sultry heights in April, and the city is also prone to destructive typhoons during this period. The coolest month is December, but temperatures remain in the twenties during the day.

The most pleasant time to visit Saigon is during the dry season when humidity is low and sightseers can keep dry.

Halal Food

One of the problem for Muslim here is the Halal Food. Eventhough you can find them in few places but the price is pretty expensive. Nasi Goreng in Saigon Halal can easily cost you USD10 (RM30).

If you are looking for halal food near Ben Thanh market try, VN Halal. Its just 7 minutes walking. The food is tasty and the price is cheaper than those you can find near Masjid.
VN Halal Address : 14 Pham Hong Thai, District 1, Saigon

Other places that you find more options for Halal food is at shops near the Du Dong Mosque which located at
