AirAsia vs MalindoAir

So far, AirAsia is not experiencing much impact from the entrance of new player Malindo Air within the aviation industry, according to analysts.

Ahmad Maghfur Usman from RHB Research Institute Sdn Bhd (RHB Research) in his recent meet with AirAsia noted that load factors for the group to both Kota Kinabalu and Kuching routes – also served by its new competitor Malindo Air – remained strong.

He also affirmed that AirAsia has not lowered airfares to compete head on with Malindo.

“Despite offering cheaper airfares, we understand that loads for Kuala Lumpur (KL) to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching routes remain encouragingly high. Kota Kinabalu and Kuching load factors have been hovering above 80 per cent, with some returning flights to KL during a week day touching above 90 per cent.

“As a comparison, Malindo’s loads has been hovering an average of 80 per cent. Although Malindo has clearly taken some market share from both AA and Malaysia Airlines Systems Bhd (MAS), we see that the pie of passengers travelling has continued to grow,” he highlighted.

“Given AA’s high frequency to these routes, passengers may prefer the latter’s flight schedule timing.”

Ahmad further stated that the groups were not competing head on in airfares.

“Malindo’s promotional airfare offerings are cheaper than AirAsia by half and much more if one were to include luggage and meals in the latter’s flights,” he noted. “This suggests that the group has not scaled down pricing to compete head on with Malindo, which proves to be a wise move given the healthy loads it has continued to achieve.

“On the hand, we notice that MAS had lowered its airfares due to Malindo’s competitive offering, notably for the economy and business classes.

“Malindo is competing in the local aviation landscape by offering full service at low cost pricing. This brings to mind how FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd’s (Firefly) jet operations had turned out – it was loss-making despite churning high loads.

“We reckon Firefly’s unit cost base could be relatively lower than Malindo’s due to the fact that Firefly charges extra for in-flight meals and offers no in-flight entertainment. We see Malindo operating at a high cost base at its initial start-up and it is only a matter of time before it stops offering such low fares.”

With Malindo’s promotional offerings only lasting up to the travel period ending by July 31, 31 2013, Ahmad said it was likely to see pricier airfares from the group moving forward. As an indication, he said most airfares on Malindo flights would be economy airfares, which would be at least 60 per cent pricier than the promotional airfares.

“As such, we still expect AirAsia’s first quarter 2013 passenger traffic to remain fairly resilient, maintaining its double-digit growth in both available seat kilometres and revenue passenger kilometres.

“Yields will continue to inch higher year on year on the back of stronger ancillary income and new routes.”
